I felt as though I was in the center of Africa because of the distinct scents and the women's vibrant clothing, but the camels, sweets, sand dunes, and Arabic, the official language of the nation, gave me the impression that I might actually be in the Middle East.
I climbed to the top of a dune and looked thoughtfully down at those amazing, off-the-beaten-path pyramid remains.
Greetings from Sudan, the place where gorgeous Africa and the Middle East finally converge.
One of the most undeveloped nations I have ever visited is Sudan.
This country in north Africa is a must-visit; it has some of the most distant ruins and pyramids on Earth, as well as the friendliest people on the planet.
Capital: Khartoum
Population: 39 million (35th)
Languages: Arabic
Area: 1,886,068km² (15th largest country)
A visa on arrival is available if entering via Khartoum International Airport, but it must be arranged in advance via a tour operator or hotel.
The official currency is Sudanese Pound 1 USD = 590 SDG You can’t use your debit or credit cards in Sudan. All in cash.
Budget: starting at $30 a day for budget backpackers if you stay in basic accommodation.
Sudan is a very seasonal country with utterly hot summers. Avoid traveling to Sudan from May to September. I visited it in December, the coldest month, but it was over 30ºC.
