In 2011, a military conflict intensified in Libya, which concluded just over a year after its onset in the autumn of Muammar Gaddafi. Following this, the individuals who initially advocated for democracy began to clash over control, resulting in two more civil conflicts.
Intermittent conflicts persisted until the nation formally divided into two primary regions, each governed by separate entities: Western Libya, centered in Tripoli, and Eastern Libya, with Benghazi as its focal point. Despite some improvements in stability since 2020, Libya has yet to establish a functioning central government, thus maintaining its status as a failed state.
Travelers are encouraged to visit Libya once again as the safety situation remains stable.
